50th Anniversary: Ranking Walt Disney World Resorts

To celebrate Walt Disney World’s 50th Anniversary, we are compiling five Top 10 lists celebrating some of our favorite aspects of our favorite place on earth. First up: resorts!

Note: We are only ranking resorts where we have stayed. It is our dream to one day stay at every resort!

10. Caribbean Beach

One feature about many of the moderate resorts that is less than appealing to us is how sprawling they are. When we are ready to go to the parks, we don’t want to have to stop within the resort before heading to the magic. We have not stayed at Caribbean Beach for over 10 years, so things might have changed, but out of the resorts where we have stayed, it’s our least favorite.

9. All Star Music/Movies/Sports

Allison will forever associate the All Star resorts with her trips down to Orlando with the dance team she was once on and now coaches. However we have stayed here several times when visiting, especially when we were in college and on a budget. That being said, as we’ve gotten older we have preferred to stay somewhere with slightly comfier beds and a slightly shorter commute to the parks.

8. Pop Century

Pop Century is very similar in our estimation to the All Star trio, however with the introduction of the Sky liner to this resort, we feel that it has an edge over the previous entry on the list. Plus, there’s a cool giant bowling pin!

7. Art of Animation

We have stayed at Art of Animation several times, and LOVE the theming. We think this is such a fantastic resort to stay at if you have kids who love Disney and want to feel immersed into the magic of their favorite films. And how much fun is the Nemo pool where you can hear the fish talking?

6. Swan and Dolphin

Both times we have stayed at the Swan and Dolphin it has been for our sorority’s national convention. We love the convenience of this resort to the Boardwalk and Epcot/DHS area, however it loses points for us based on theming and a lack of Disney magic. Also. Can we talk about how confusing the “dolphin” is on the top of the resort? Our best guess is that it’s meant to represent a dolphin fish…which is just a fancy word for Mahi Mahi. But we guess Swan and Mahi Mahi doesn’t have the same ring to it…

5.  Coronado Springs

Allison stayed here for the first time this past summer, and got to stay in the Gran Destino Tower. You can see her full review for that experience here, but TLDR...it was real nice.

4. Yacht Club

Can we talk about the smell of the Yacht Club lobby? It is so intoxicating that some days you are tempted to just hang out there instead heading to the parks. One of our favorite features of the Yacht Club is the ability to walk straight into the World Showcase through the International Gateway at Epcot, which makes it an ideal location when planning a trip around one of the Epcot festivals.

3. The Polynesian

Full Confession: Our experience at The Polynesian was that of the King Kamehameha Club Level. Reader, there was as much Pog Juice as anyone would want. The beds are luxurious, and the views are to die for. And can you say dole whip on command? Although we know that the Polynesian is not in the price range for most trips down to Walt Disney World, it is most definitely worth the splurge should you ever want to truly #treatyoself.

2. Port Orleans: French Quarter

Two words: Mickey Beignets.

A few more words: We LOVE the quaintness and intimacy of Port Orleans: French Quarter. This is one (if not the) smallest resorts on property, and it is probably Megan’s favorite resort at which to stay. The beds are comfortable, the price point is manageable, and oh yeah, did we mention the Mickey Beignets?

1. Grand Floridian

Allison is biased, but she thinks there is no hotel on earth like the Grand Floridian. This is the resort where she used to stay with her family when they would travel to Walt Disney World every year, and she has such fond memories of staying there with her grandparents. Megan and Allison got to stay there again a few years ago when Allison’s mom and sister travelled down to Florida with the pals for one of their Princess Half Marathons, and it was just as special as she remembered. Even when we aren’t staying at the Grand Floridian it is one of our favorite places for resort dining. Between the Grand Floridian Cafe for brunch, the Enchanted Rose lounge for drinks, or afternoon tea at the Grand Floridian’s Garden View Tea Room, there is truly something for everybody at this resort.
