World Princess Week: Top Five Alternative Princess Outfits

We are so exciting to be celebrating World Princess Week along with Walt Disney World and Disneyland. While being a princess is about so much more that what you wear, we can’t help but love the style moments of some of our favorite Disney princesses. While they all have an iconic look that they are most known for, today we are celebrating some of their other, though no less chic, looks these princesses sport in their movies.

Honorable Mentions

  • Cinderella’s Pink Original Ballgown—an original design AND it’s vintage? We love a queen who rejects fast fashion.

  • Cinderella’s Wedding Dress—Timeless. Classic. Stunning. No notes

  • Tiana’s 1920s Business Mogul dress—An outfit that says I can look fashionable AND run a beignet empire?

5. Tiana’s “Almost There” dress

Yes, this dress is technically part of a fantasy scene. However Tiana looks STUNNING and deserves to look every inch of the fabulous business mogul she will ascend to at the end of the film. This dress also appears when Dr. Facilier makes Tiana a deal toward the end of the film, and helps Tiana to realize that while she is capable of attaining success, having someone to share that success with will make it all that more sweet.

4. Aurora’s “Yes, I’ll dance with this strange man in the woods” peasant dress

You can make it blue or make it pink, but I say Make. It. Neutral! While I do worry about Aurora accidentally giving herself tetnus by not wearing shoes in a very woodsy forest, the chic nature of the outfit more than makes up for her lack of footwear. The piece de resistance, however, is her unassuming black headband, which gives crown energy but in a way that says, “I might be a princess, but I promise I’m low maintenance.”

3. Jasmine’s “Prisoner with a Party Pony” red two piece

Jasmine is a girl who knows the power of a signature style. She rocks three looks in the film (four if you count her “street rat garb”) and all three have similar silhouettes. Her final red two piece, complete with the most chic high pony tail to ever grace a Disney film allows her to radiate power, even while in Jafar’s creepy control. Sure, we could get into a conversation about the sexualization of young women in Disney films, or we could choose to see this as a victory for crop tops everywhere.

2. Belle’s green “Oh, this library is for me” dress

Listen, I might be biased, but Belle clearly has the best wardrobe out of any Disney princess. While you will see a lot of “blue dress” or “yellow dress” Belle Disney-bounding, real ones know that her green and pink dresses (both briefly seen in the song “Something There”) are her best looks. The fabric of her green dress is clearly luxurious ((‘m thinking a nice velvet), and it’s no wonder the Beast took a look at her and said “I’m going to give this girl all the books I own!”

1.Ariel’s “I’m human now and have the legs to prove it” sequin dress

For a girl whose main outfit is a purple bra, Ariel rocks more outfits than you think in The Little Mermaid. From her Princess Diana-esque wedding dress to her dirty sheet wrap lewk by Scuttle, Ariel knows that the importance of body language is helped with a sense of style. However we have her dad (weird) to thank for her BEST outfit of the entire film, nay THE ENTIRE DISNEY UNIVERSE. After Ariel and Prince Eric have successfully defeated Ursula, Eric lays recuperating on the beach. From a distance we see Ariel staring at him longingly, with her father begrudgingly realizing his daughter is determined to live a life different than the one he envisioned for her. My guess is he felt bad for breaking her statue at the beginning of the movie, because not only does he give her legs, but he decks her out in a glittering fantasy of a dress, leg slit and all. Papa Triton didn’t have to go that hard, but he did, and for that we are all thankful.
