Let's Boo This: Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party with a Toddler
Boo to you! Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party is BACK this year, and I was lucky enough to attend the first party. This was also my two-year-old son’s very first visit to a Disney Park (and my first time navigating the Parks with a toddler in tow) so I wanted to share some tips for partying with a toddler, as well as the details for our costumes!
First, the fits! Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party is one of the only times adults can wear full-on costumes to the Parks so you have to have fun with it, even in August! We decided to go with Wreck It Ralph because A. Jackson loves it and B. I thought we’d easily be able to adapt the costumes for the heat. Some people still commit to full length costume ball gowns in the heat, but that is not my journey as a sweaty person. It was pretty easy to put together! Here are the links for what I bought:
Vanellope
I added a few pink stitches to this teal t-shirt
Vanellope leggings that I cut into shorts
Candy pieces that I added velcro to for my hair
Ralph
Fix-it Felix
Hammer I spray painted gold (Jackson wasn’t interested in the belt, but it was intended)
Blue shirt and jean shorts
Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party: Tips with a Toddler
Arrive early! Though the party officially starts at 7 p.m., you can enter as early as 4 p.m. Hopefully, your little one takes a great nap that day so they come ready to party (and you too!). You do not need a park reservation unless you wish to enter the park earlier than 4 p.m., and if your little one is 2 and under, they do not need a ticket. The Magic Kingdom closes to non-party guests at 6 p.m., and we found the 6-7 p.m. hour a great time to ride rides. Peter Pan was only a 20-minute wait, and we walked on Dumbo and the Jungle Cruise easily! If you don’t care about waiting to see Mickey and Minnie in their Halloween attire, the wait to meet them in their 50th outfits was also quite short when we arrived a little after 5 p.m.
Try the treats! There are so many exclusive treats to try at this year’s party. but note that most of the exclusive treats don’t start serving until the party officially begins at 7 p.m. I tried to order the corn cake at Pecos Bill at 6:40 p.m., and I wasn’t able to. My husband did try the buffalo chicken-filled Spellbinding Fried Pie from Golden Oak Outpost! Nothing is more dangerous than a hangry toddler, so keep the snacks coming. Jackson wanted popcorn – his fave – and as soon as he saw the party exclusive mummy Mickey popcorn bucket, he needed it.
Check out the dance parties! There are two dance parties offered as part of MNSSHP: one with Disney Jr. characters and one with characters from Monsters, Inc. This is a great way for your toddler to expend some energy in a more contained environment.
Try to catch the first parade! We had hoped to catch the first Boo To You Parade at 9:15 (and Max as Powerline before!!), but unfortunately ghoulish weather canceled it for the evening we were there, as can happen in Central Florida. We were bummed to miss it but knew our little dude wasn’t going to make it until the 11:15 p.m. parade.
Prioritize your spooky delights! For us, it was mostly about being there, meeting Mickey and getting to have shorter lines for some attractions. There is so much to do at the party, from rare character greetings (Winnie and friends in their Halloween costumes!) to exclusive merch (the line was waaay too long for us but we did snag a popcorn bucket) to getting as much candy as humanly possible on the treat trails, that it’s almost impossible to do it all in one night! So make a list of your top priorities of how you want to spend your spooky evening!
