Recipe: Cheeseburger Spring Rolls
The Magic Kingdom is home to many a fabulous snack, and the cheeseburger spring rolls are one of the most famed snacks in the land. We had long wanted to try them, but these cheesy delicacies kept evading us. Once, we couldn’t locate the cart that serves them. Another time, we found the cart too late. Thankfully, we finally made it happen on our trip right before the holidays! Being that we are staying safe at home, we thought now was the perfect time to figure out how to make them for ourselves. Until the parks are open and the cart is serving up hot rolls yet again, we’ve got you:
Ingredients
1 lb ground beef
½ white onion, diced
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp salt
8 oz. cheese of choice (I used American – Velveeta or cheddar would also work well)
Pickle relish (unless you’re Allison. Allison loathes pickles)
Egg roll/wonton/spring roll wrappers
1-2 cups oils for frying
The first thing I had to do was figure out a gluten free wrapper. I first tried rice spring roll wrappers I found on my weekly grocery voyage, and my pals, it was a real fail. Luckily, I had this mix for a gluten free egg roll wrapper from Mom’s Place Gluten Free on hand! You can find egg roll or spring roll wrappers on your next regular grocery run or you can mix up your own with ingredients you likely have on hand. I found a gluten free version to make your own as well!
First start by heating a bit of oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Toss in the diced onions. Once the onions are translucent, add in the ground beef and brown. Drain grease as needed. Add in your seasonings.
Turn your stove heat down to low, add in your cheese and mix until melted. Add in your pickle relish, according to your level of pickle enthusiasm.
Prepare your wrappers and add a line of filling along one corner, roll and fold in the edges. You can seal with a bit of water along the edge. Repeat until all of your filling is used or you run out of wrappers.
For frying, there are a few options. If you have an air fryer, you can cook 7-9 minutes on 390 degrees. If you have a deep fryer, heat according to instructions and fry until golden. I chose to fry on the stove top in a deep sauce pan. Heat 1 cup of oil until very hot, add rolls and rotate using tongs.
Let cool and enjoy. We recommend pairing with a pineapple beverage and pretending you’re in Adventureland!
