What We're Watching On Disney+

Life is pretty stressful these days. Luckily, Disney+ keeps churning out content to keep us company during our increased time spent at home. Here’s four shows we’ve truly enjoyed lately!

Black is King

We should have know that when Beyonce released “The Gift” last year that our Queen had something bigger up her sleeves. “Black is King” is a joyous combination of both black and African culture with the plot of “The Lion King” acting as a loose tie between the musical segments. This is a triumph of visual story-telling and a powerful testament to why representation matters .

Howard

At the end of the film “Beauty and the Beast” the end titles read, “To our friend Howard, who gave a mermaid her voice and a beast his soul, we will be forever grateful." This beautiful tribute is expanded in the new documentary telling the life story of lyricist Howard Ashman. His genius is evident within the first five minutes of the film as he parses the way Paige O’Hara should say the word “quiet” in the opening number of Beauty and the Beast. It is this attention to detail that would help usher in the Disney Renaissance and create the films that inspired our original love of Disney.

Into the Unknown: The Making of Frozen 2

As Disney fanatics we love getting to see what goes into the creation of our favorite films and attractions. We both leapt at the chance to watch this behind the scenes look at the making of what might have been the most anticipated animated sequel ever. It’s hard to say what part of this film was more engaging—watching animators work on two-minute sequences, admiring the work ethic of Jennifer Lee, or just marveling at the amount of detail that goes into a 90 minute film. As “Show Yourself” stans we loved the attention this song got in the film and found ourselves immediately rewatching the film after finishing the documentary.

Muppets, Now!

While the format is a bit (okay, a lot) chaotic, are the Muppets even the Muppets without some semblance of chaos? These 25 minute episodes are short bursts of fun and colorful joy that are a perfect way to take away any residual pandemic stress you might be feeling. Did the world need Taye Diggs and Miss Piggy doing hot yoga? Did the world need a taco competition between Danny Trejo and the Swedish Chef? The answer to both questions is a resounding yes, yes we did.
